Ingredients

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups light brown sugar gently packed
2 tsps baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground cloves
15 ozs pumpkin purée or just under two cups thick puree from a fresh pumpkin
1 cup sunflower oil organic, or other neutral vegetable oil
1/3 cup maple syrup
1/3 cup water
1 cup chopped walnuts optional, I omitted these due to a nut allergy in our Halloween crowd
5 tbsps butter at room temperature
1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar sifted, or more to taste — I like it tangier and less sweet than the way it typically tastes
